Our curriculum

At Greyton House, our educational philosophy shapes every aspect of teaching and learning. It guides curriculum design, instructional approaches, classroom management, and assessment, ensuring that every child’s growth is nurtured. We use CAPS as our foundation, and enrich it with the principles of Montessori, Waldorf and Reggio Emilia, adapting these approaches to our unique Greyton House context and environment.

This blend allows us to offer a learning experience that is holistic, child-centred, and deeply connected to both curiosity and creativity.

Preschool

Learning through play: Ages 2 to 4

Our preschool is a joyful, calm space where young children learn through movement, creativity, stories, and time in nature. Each day is filled with play, music, crafts, and gentle routines that help little ones feel safe, curious, and ready to explore.

Learning unfolds through hands-on activities that invite children to build, create, imagine, and discover. Sensory play, art, music, drama, and storytelling spark early language and thinking skills while nurturing confidence and social awareness.

Behind the scenes, teachers guide a thoughtful programme designed around developmental milestones. Flexible groups, varied materials, and themed exploration areas support each child at their own pace. From the children’s point of view, they are simply enjoying friends, teachers, and the wonders of the world around them.

Foundation Phase

Foundation Phase learning: Grade R to 3

Our Foundation Phase classrooms are lively, welcoming spaces where children learn through movement, stories, creativity and guided play. Each day blends structured learning with imaginative activity, helping young learners grow in confidence while building strong early skills.

Lessons are brought to life through play based tasks, rich story telling, music, art and drama. Children explore ideas with puzzles, manipulatives and hands on projects that deepen their understanding while keeping curiosity at the centre of every activity.

Teachers guide a thoughtful programme that supports each child at their own pace. Flexible activities, varied materials and curiosity driven exploration help learners engage meaningfully with themes in language, mathematics and the world around them. From the children’s point of view, school feels like a place where learning happens naturally as they question, create and discover together.

Intermediate Phase

Intermediate Phase learning: Grades 4 to 6

Our Intermediate Phase classrooms are vibrant spaces where students begin to take more responsibility for their learning. Here, curiosity meets challenge, and lessons are designed to stretch thinking, foster problem solving, and develop independent, confident learners.

Learning is active and hands on. Students explore concepts through experiments, creative projects, arts, music and drama, while interactive discussions and storytelling encourage imagination, moral understanding, and critical thinking.

Teachers guide a programme that balances structure with independence. Flexible groupings, tiered assignments and tactile, inquiry-driven activities allow every learner to engage at their own pace. Students investigate topics that spark their interest, solve real-world problems, and use technology to research and present ideas, building both knowledge and digital literacy. From the students’ point of view, learning is an exciting journey of discovery, collaboration and creativity.

Senior Phase

Senior Phase learning: Grade 7

Our Senior Phase classroom is a space where students step into adolescence with curiosity, independence, and a readiness for new challenges. Here, learning is deeper, more complex, and designed to develop critical thinking, problem solving, and self-directed study skills.

Students engage actively with ideas through discussions, debates, storytelling, arts, music and drama. Hands-on projects, experiments, and creative tasks help bring lessons to life, while guided questioning and inquiry encourage independent thought and deeper understanding.

Each child is supported with a flexible programme tailored to their strengths and interests. Individualised learning, research projects, and real-world applications give students opportunities to explore topics that inspire them, while technology, multimedia projects, and collaborative tools build both digital literacy and teamwork skills.

Our teachers guide learning carefully, gradually releasing responsibility to the students as they become more confident, reflective, and organised. Students are encouraged to set goals, reflect on progress, and learn from feedback. Classrooms are designed to support self-directed learning, combining independence with a focus on the whole child—mind, body and spirit.

Sport

At Greyton House, we find joy in movement and believe in learning through physical activity. Our younger students focus on developing ball skills, fitness, and coordination, while older learners enjoy athletics, hockey, and cross-country. We also engage in the occasional friendly matche with other schools, ensuring that sports are always fun and enriching.

We are proud to offer sports twice a week under the expert guidance of Mrs. T, who has been a dedicated sports coach at Greyton House for over 25 years.

We aim to nurture each child’s potential and make every sporting experience memorable!

Art and Music

At Greyton House, our art and music program is an essential part of our curriculum, enriching the learning experience for all students. Our talented artist, Gabby van Heerden, leads weekly art classes for Grades R through 7, encouraging creativity and self-expression through various mediums and techniques.

In addition, our music program is designed to inspire and engage. For Grades R to 3, Frank introduces students to the joy of music through recorders. For our senior students in Grades 4 to 7, local artists Divine and Sinead bring music to life with marimbas, jembe drums, and piano, fostering a vibrant and joyful environment.

We also offer performance opportunities that showcase our students’ talents and fill our school with creativity and joy.

Drama Helen O Grady

Our weekly drama lessons are designed to ignite creativity and build confidence in every student. Led by the talented Jaques from the Helen O'Grady Drama Academy, our drama classes cater to all ages, from Grades R through 7.

Our drama lessons offer a dynamic environment where students explore storytelling, character development, and performance skills. Through imaginative play, our learners gain not only artistic expression but also essential life skills such as teamwork, empathy, and self-confidence.

Our students regularly participate in performances that showcase their talents and bring the school community together.
